Section 1 of the Westside Purple Line Extension project was the first of three to be designed and constructed as part of Metro’s goal to extend the subway to West Los Angeles and eventually to Santa Monica. Section 1 extended the existing Red Line by 3.92 miles beginning at the Wilshire/Western station. The work involved demolition of existing structures and utility relocation to make room for the twin tunnels and three stations, excavation of tunnels and construction of tracks, stations, power traction and control system. The stations are located at the intersections of Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega. All three station boxes are located within the Wilshire Boulevard right-of-way with station portals extending to off-street entrances.
MARRS Role
MARRS provided resident engineering, third party coordination, inspection, and project engineering for the demolition and utility relocation along the corridor and all three stations. These activities were required in order to clear the area for station excavation and tunneling. The activities included constructability reviews, utility relocation coordination, protection and coordination, and traffic management and control. These were provided both in an office engineering capacity and field inspection for tunnel excavation. Presently, MARRS is providing office engineer and inspection for the tunnel excavation and construction of the stations.
